Funny Sounding Words

Boys! And girls… there’s a specific genre of words out there that just feel orgasmicly good to say out loud, even if you have zero idea what they actually mean (which most of the time I do). I’m not trying to sound like a dictionary in fact rather I’m trying to prove I’m better than you(shoutout MJF) and prove that i am smart here. This is strictly about dropping a weird 19th century phrase, some old English Cwyde {(noun) – A saying, speech, sentence, or phrase} into the boys group chat, refusing to elaborate, and just carrying on with your day like nothing happened.

Below are the actual definitions for 12 of these glorious words which I will be attempting to make a part of my everyday vernacular, translated into plain easy to understand English… after googling what the words mean because I was using most of these terribly wrong:

  • Rigmarole: A long, confusing, and completely unnecessary process or story designed to waste your time.

  • Kerfuffle: A commotion or fuss, usually caused by a minor disagreement or someone overreacting.

  • Gobbledygook: Language that is so overly complicated or full of jargon that it literally sounds like nonsense.

  • Hodgepodge: A random, messy mixture of things that don’t really belong together.

  • Brouhaha: An noisy, over the top uproar or public freakout over something that usually isn’t that big of a deal.

  • Balderdash: Senseless talk or absolute nonsense.

  • Hullabaloo: A lot of loud noise, excitement, or general chaos happening all at once.

  • Cattywampus: Crooked, askew, or positioned diagonally. Anything that isn’t lined up right.

  • Snollygoster: A shrewd, unprincipled person, historically used to describe dirty politicians who only care about office for personal gain. *My Favorite word*

  • Absquatulate: To leave abruptly, run off, or disappear in a hurry (often taking something with you).

  • Widdershins: Moving in a direction opposite to the sun’s course, aka counterclockwise.

  • Bloviate: To speak at great length in a pompous, arrogant way without actually making any real points.

Hi Sebastian! Something my wife and i have unsuccessfully tried to incorporate in our language is “Helter-skelter”. Always fun to say but never rolls off the tongue properly in a sentence. thanks for the extra SAT words in this post!
